CTE Diagnosis in NFL Players

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain. CTE is believed to be caused by repetitive trauma to the head. It can lead to memory loss, depression, and dementia.

A recent examination of the brains of 91 deceased former NFL players found that 87 (96%) of them tested positive for CTE. According to the study, forty percent of the brains that tested positive were from offensive and defensive linemen. Since these linemen come into contact with each other on every play of every game, these results support some researchers’ theory that it is the repeat minor head traumas that occur during the course of the game which pose the greatest risk for a player developing CTE. This is in stark contrast to the thought that CTE can only come from violent collisions which lead to concussions.

The chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System stated that CTE is a very real disease and it has been identified in hundreds of football players. This is not just a symptom of these players growing old; it is a disease in their brain.
