Did IVC Filter Have Fatal Flaw?

An NBC News investigation focused on the potentially deadly risks associated with the IVC Recovery filter manufactured and sold by C.R. Bard. The report found that at least 27 deaths have been associated with the filter over the past ten years along with 300 other non-fatal problems. Two serious complications uncovered during the investigation include pieces of the device breaking off and piercing the heart of one victim while another patient’s filter migrated into her heart and punctured it. Bard maintained that its filters were approved for use by the FDA, but the article points out that getting FDA approval was not a smooth process for the company.
