Billy Jack Haynes wrestles WWE into federal court
Billy Jack Haynes, was a superstar at the height of WWE’s popularity in 1986-1988. He was featured in Wrestlemania III on March 29, 1987, considered the seminal event in the history of US wrestling with over one million viewers. In Wrestlemania III he was hit with Chains, received 20 stitches to the head and experienced a concussion. During that year Mr. Haynes wrestled in over 300 out of 365 days, including 97 days in a row. Despite the financial success of wrestling, the WWE failed to provide even the most basic warnings or health care to Mr. Haynes or other wrestlers who participated in WWE events.
According to Mr. Haynes he and other wrestlers were never treated or advised about the risks of repeated head injuries and were encouraged to “play through the pain.” Through hundreds of matches, despite numerous concussions and injuries he was never once told to stop fighting and was told he would be fired if he didn’t participate in matches despite injuries.
Today, at age 61, Haynes, along with hundreds of other wrestlers, still receives no financial or medical support from the WWE. These former wrestler suffer from long term brain damage from repeated, untreated concussions and head trauma. Dozens of former WWE wrestlers have even died prematurely as a result of their injuries.
The lawsuit seeks to create a fund for former WWE wrestlers and hold the WWE accountable for its failure to maintain a safe working environment.
