Patient Wins $4.5 Million in first Wright Hip Implant Trial
A California jury recently awarded $4.5 million to a Wright Medical metal on metal hip implant recipient to compensate him and his wife for a defective implant that caused him harm. The jury found that while the Profemur implant the patient received was defective, it was not negligently designed by Wright. The issue was whether laser guidance marks on the implant were too deep and caused the weakening of the device. The Profemur implants are marketed to last 15 to 20 years and in this case the device failed after less than three years. This case was the first to be tried of nearly 1,200 against Wright Medical and it is not clear whether or not the company plans to appeal the jury’s decision.
