A recent article on Forbes.com reported that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has been accused of hiding evidence which would have raised awareness of the potential for boys and young male adults taking Risperdal to develop gynecomastia back in 2003. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and its use stimulates increased production of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin plays a role in milk production in humans. A 2003 publication by the company failed to cite a study which showed a “significant relationship” between an increase in prolactin levels in boys and the development of prolactin related side effects such as gynecomastia.
